Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto, and Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopolous has been granted a 72 hour negotiating window to extend Dickey. The tweets(read bottom first):
You probably know what the reported deal is structured like, but if you don't, it is as follows.
C Travis d'Arnaud
SP Noah Syndergaard
C John Buck
Low End Prospect/Cash
To Blue Jays
SP R.A. Dickey
C Josh Thole
My feelings are torn right now. On one hand, R.A Dickey is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and he puts this team over the top. On the other, trading our #1 and #3 prospects in d'Arnaud and Syndergaard really hurts. But, in the end, I'm in favour of this trade. The time is now to compete. The Orioles suck(as always). The Rays still have no offense. The Red Sox are laughable. And, to get a picture of how bad the Yankees are, they have contacted the Angels about acquiring Vernon Wells(LOL). For the next 3 years, the 3 years which the core of this Jays team is signed for, Toronto should be in the playoffs winning games in October.
AA isn't even going all in. Yes, we are trading 2 of our top 3 prospects, but we still have such a deep system. The amount of starters in the lower levels of the minors is crazy! Daniel Norris, Roberto Osuna, Aaron Sanchez, Adonys Cardona, Matt Smoral, Chase DeJong, Tyler Gonzales and more. Basically, what I'm trying to say, is that AA and Andrew Tinnish are excellent drafters. A top pick means nothing to them. They reap the rewards of the draft no matter where the pick is. They built this farm system from scratch(going from #28 to #3 in a couple of years), and they could bring it back from a 10-20 range back into the top 10 with ease. What's the point of building such a great farm system when you're afraid to use it?
A lot of people are concerned that this team is built for 3 years, then it will suck. It won't. We have those prospects, and with 3 years of winning comes $, which could then be used in FA.
I guess I do like this trade...
More on this when/if the deal becomes official.
To end, a tweet from MLB.com associate reporter Chris Toman that is really the only argument anybody needs to prove this is a good trade for the Blue Jays.
